Hurricane Ida Impact
Strength.
Peak wind gusts of 172 mph were recorded at the mouth of Bayou Lafourche. Numerous tornadoes with even higher windspeed were documented in the area with records up to 220 mph.
Destruction.
Hurricane Ida is estimated to have resulted in at least $65 billion of damage, $18 billion of which occurred in Louisiana. Residents of the communities along Bayou Lafourche were left with significant damage to homes, some completely destroyed, in addition to suffering without power, communications, or potable water for weeks.
Response.
The media coverage focused on larger areas such as New Orleans and Houma, leaving the more rural communities with lacking response from federal and charitable organizations due to the reduced awareness.
Community.
The residents along Bayou Lafourche are dedicated to helping each other in this recovery process. The destruction was severe and many residents are relying on assistance from local churches and volunteers for supplies (food and cleaning items) and debris removal. The recovery process will likely continue into the foreseeable future.
SEAL’s Trip Down the Bayou
On October 30th, SEAL members organized a supply delivery with the Community Bible Church in Cut Off, LA, which is providing assistance throughout the community. Additionally, SEAL worked with the parish government to assist families in need of assistance with debris cleanup. See an overview of our work below.
Make a donation.
The Community Bible Church in Cut Off, LA, has been a significant help to the recovery process of the community. Our team visited their facilities during our service trip to deliver supplies and learn more about the needs of the community. Although the church itself suffered catastrophic damage, through its network of members and affiliates, it has been able to provide some immediate community relief and is working to expand its reach. One of the most significant aid offerings by the church includes individual grants to families in need to help bridge the gap between insurance coverage and FEMA distributions. Please follow the link below to learn more and access the donation page.
Other ways to contribute.
After the team’s initial service trip, it was clear that more assistance was needed in the community to aid in the recovery. SEAL is planning to conduct a follow-up trip including supply/donations drop-off and additional clean-up work with families in need.
